Meet St. Bernardine Realino, the remarkable Renaissance man who went from an accomplished young scholar and civil servant to a Jesuit priest and beloved saint. Born on December 1, 1530, Realino studied at the university, wore carnival clothes, sang student songs in taverns, translated classical works including the Odyssey and Aristophanes, and even wrote a commentary on Catullus at the age of 18. He later served as a civil servant before, at the age of 34, suddenly becoming a Jesuit.

He celebrated his first Mass in 1566, writing to his father, “I am then a priest, a thing which you never thought of for me, nor did I enter surely with this in mind.” He eventually became so beloved by the people of Lecce that the city regarded him as its protector even before his death.

Father Francis Sweeney, S.J., a member of the English faculty at Boston College, tells the story of this fascinating saint whose life moved from the world of the Renaissance into one of priestly ministry and sanctity.
